  • Richard Firth Green, The Ohio State University: "Wightes as it be: A Prehistory of the Early Modern Demon"

Conference Theme:

Over the last forty years, the pendulum in medieval studies has swung from an emphasis on the alterity of the Middle Ages--its differences from our world--to an interest in the many kinds of diversity within the medieval world. This year SEMA encourages conference participants to consider the ways in which their work demonstrates how The Rules Are Different Here. We welcome sessions on or individual research into the distinctive ideologies, philosophies, theologies and social forces at work within medieval society, variations in medieval art and literature both across and within cultures, religious minorities and heterodoxies, mythical creatures, alternative lives, or any other aspects of the varying alterities of medieval life.
