Philosophy Club is a monthly meeting of the minds involving faculty, philosophy majors and minors, and students interested in pursuing advanced studies in philosophy. A student convener sets the agenda and distributes texts for discussion. There are usually six meetings a year with a new president elected annually; the president offers guidance to conveners in their selection of discussion topics. Meetings allow students and professors to continue their philosophical dialogue outside of class in a congenial atmosphere. The Stetson University Philosophy Club is officially recognized by the Student Government Association.
Topics in 2007-2008:
The philosophy club has had an exciting year so far. We began the fall semester with a discussion of corporate responsibility at Dr Hall’s house. In October we talked about what has changed in the democratic process. Ben had us read his paper on Leibniz and life at Dr Rust’s house. We started the spring semester off with a discussion of Ron Cooper’s book, Hume’s Fork. We then prepared for Dr Swinburne’s visit by discussing “What makes me me.” Finally, we assembled a caravan to go see Martha Nussbaum in Jacksonville. The Philosophy Department would like to thank Derek Stottlemyer, the club's president, for all the good work he has done this year.
